Overview
S55C (comparable to AISI 1055) and SK5 carry more carbon than S45C, so they reach higher hardness after quenching and resist wear better.
They are used for blades, springs and wear parts that are heat treated after machining.
Key Properties
Typical values from the MatWeb datasheet for AISI 1055 Steel, hot rolled, 19-32 mm (0.75-1.25 in) round. Machined parts take the properties of the stock they are cut from.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 7.87 g/cm³ |
| Tensile strength | 650 MPa |
| Yield strength | 355 MPa |
| Elongation at break | 12 % |
| Hardness | HB 192 |
| Modulus of elasticity | 200 GPa |
| Thermal conductivity | 51.9 W/m-K |
Typical Applications
- Blades and cutting edges
- Wear plates and guides
- Spring parts
- Hardened pins
Machining Notes
Machine before hardening; leave grinding stock on surfaces that need tight tolerance after heat treatment.
