Overview
S45C (AISI 1045) is a medium-carbon steel that balances strength, toughness and cost. It can be through-hardened, quenched and tempered or induction hardened on wear surfaces.
It is the default steel for shafts, gears and machine components that do not need corrosion resistance.
Key Properties
Typical values from the MatWeb datasheet for AISI 1045 Steel, hot rolled, 19-32 mm (0.75-1.25 in) round. Machined parts take the properties of the stock they are cut from.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 7.87 g/cm³ |
| Tensile strength | 565 MPa |
| Yield strength | 310 MPa |
| Elongation at break | 16 % |
| Hardness | HB 163 |
| Modulus of elasticity | 206 GPa |
| Thermal conductivity | 51.9 W/m-K |
Typical Applications
- Shafts and axles
- Gears and sprockets
- Machine base plates
- Jigs and fixtures
Machining Notes
Rusts without protection — specify black oxide, zinc plating or paint. Datasheet values are hot rolled.
