Overview
S15C (comparable to AISI 1015) and structural SS400 are low-carbon steels: inexpensive, easy to weld and ductile, with moderate strength.
They can be case-carburized when a hard wear surface is needed over a tough core.
Key Properties
Typical values from the MatWeb datasheet for AISI 1015 Steel, as rolled. Machined parts take the properties of the stock they are cut from.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 7.87 g/cm³ |
| Tensile strength | 420 MPa |
| Yield strength | 315 MPa |
| Elongation at break | 39 % |
| Hardness | HB 126 |
| Modulus of elasticity | 200 GPa |
| Thermal conductivity | 51.9 W/m-K |
| Machinability | 60 % |
Typical Applications
- Base plates and brackets
- Welded frames
- Spacers and simple shafts
- Low-cost fixtures
Machining Notes
Needs a coating against rust. Softer steels can leave burrs; ask for deburring on cosmetic edges.
