Overview
C5240 is a copper-tin-phosphorus alloy with about 10% tin. It combines high strength, good fatigue and spring properties and excellent wear resistance against steel.
It is a common material for bushings, springs and electrical contacts that must survive repeated loading.
Key Properties
Typical values from the MatWeb datasheet for Phosphor bronze 10% Sn, UNS C52400, H02 Temper flat products. Machined parts take the properties of the stock they are cut from.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 8.78 g/cm³ |
| Tensile strength | 570 MPa |
| Elongation at break | 32 % |
| Hardness | HRB 92 |
| Modulus of elasticity | 110 GPa |
| Thermal conductivity | 50 W/m-K |
| Melting range | 845–1000 °C |
| Machinability | 30 % |
Typical Applications
- Bushings and thrust washers
- Springs and spring contacts
- Bearing plates
- Marine fittings
Machining Notes
Around 30% machinability; tougher on tools than brass. Good choice when a bronze part also needs spring-back.
